In 2023, Ngapali Beach, Myanmar’s premier holiday destination, faces an unprecedented crisis. Fears of arms shipments to the Arakan Army have led the military regime to block road travel to the area and prohibit fishing boats from leaving the bay. These measures have devastated the local economy, crippling tourism, the lifeblood of the region, and leaving countless workers unemployed. The fishing community, unable to venture out to sea, has lost its primary source of income, forcing many to rely on food donations to survive. Meanwhile, the road closure has disrupted the flow of essential goods and gas, causing escalating prices and further hardship for the area’s residents.
